Hike, Jog or Bike in Nature
While you may need to pay an entrance fee in certain parks, spending time in nature is one of the most inexpensive things you can do in Monterey, CA — and one of the most rewarding! You can walk or jog along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail and enjoy views of boats and marine life along the way. Hike at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or cycle along the many miles of trails at Fort Ord National Monument, as a mountain biker’s paradise.
Watch the Wildlife
Many wild animals call this region home. See sea lions play in their natural habitat at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (vehicle entry costs $5-$10) or grab your binoculars to do some birding at Carmel River State Beach. If you’re visiting from October to February, you can also see Monarch Butterflies in Pacific Grove at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary during their annual migration. There is no charge to visit the Sanctuary, but donations are appreciated.
Go for a Scenic Drive
Driving in Monterey County is an activity of its own, as our region boasts many scenic routes you won’t want to miss. You can drive down the Big Sur coastline to enjoy its unspoiled natural beauty or travel to Carmel Valley Village, spotting horse and cattle ranches, wineries and rolling hillsides. You can also take a short drive north to Moss Landing to visit Elkhorn Slough to witness (and hear) the sea lions relaxing on the pier.

Follow the Path of History through downtown Monterey to see historic adobe buildings and gardens like Larkin House or visit Colton Hall Museum to learn about where California’s first constitution was drafted. Nearby you’ll also find the Old Monterey Jail, a favorite attraction for locals and visitors alike.
Explore Charming Towns
Within Monterey County, you’ll find many unique places to explore on foot. You can window shop the art galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea and explore this picturesque village's hidden courtyards and passageways. If you’re into antiques and collectibles, head to Cannery Row Antique Mall for quirky finds.
