What Is Your Favorite Part of Monterey Car Week? Are There Any Particular Events or Races You’re Excited About This Year?

My favorite part of Car Week is the people. Nowhere else in the world do owners, collectors, sponsors and journalists come together each year to celebrate the past, present and future of the automobile. This holds true whether the cars are racing on the track, cruising through our beautiful streets or showcasing their designs on manicured lawns. Monterey Car Week is truly a special lifestyle experience.

The top of my list will always be the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August, which I’ve long called a museum revving to life. I do appreciate the IMSA sports car racing and IndyCar. Both series bring high-intensity action where you can really sense the drama and importance of winning.

Unique Events at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Monterey Car Week 2024

We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of historic racing at Laguna Seca this year. This event marked the beginning of the international vintage racing scene.

Special Cars & Collections at Monterey Car Week 2024

We're celebrating the achievements of different car brands and individuals since 1974. Guests will see a collection of 29 exceptional cars from the 50 years of celebrations. However the math doesn’t add up, as some brands were featured in multiple years.

What is Your Favorite Car?

One of my favorite race cars is the Porsche 917/30. The first time I saw this 1,200-horsepower turbocharged rocket was when it sped between Turns 4 and 5.

The Evolution of Monterey Car Week at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Imagine 50 years ago when there were just two events. The Historic racing on Saturday complements Sunday’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance—two days...two magnificent events. As interest grew, the racing expanded to multiple days, including Monterey Pre-Reunion & Corkscrew Hillclimb followed by Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Fast-forward to today and there are now more than 30 events dotting the Central Coast.

What Inside Tips Do You Have for First-Time Attendees to Make the Most Out of Monterey Car Week?

Enjoy the experience. Attend the major events, but also be sure to watch the cars driving around Carmel-by-the-Sea and downtown Monterey near the auctions. It is an automotive rolling feast of rarely seen classics to the most modern hypercars.

Patience is key. As visitors arrive and fill our hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, local businesses and streets, remember the tremendous economic benefit our businesses are realizing. The world’s eyes are on us as hundreds of international journalists descend and report back on their experiences. Our surveys have found that 75% of visitors to our events intend to return during non-Car Week times to continue exploring our destination.

Favorite Events in Monterey County

The California International Air Show in Salinas is always a fantastic experience. Also, being of German descent, I can't forget to mention Oktoberfest at the Monterey County Fairgrounds.

Favorite Outdoor Activities

I enjoy walking to Asilomar State Beach, perching on the rocks and enjoying the crashing waves or exploring the tide pools. It is such a relaxing way to disconnect.

Favorite Local Restaurants

I have a few favorite local places to eat in Monterey County during Car Week and outside of Car Week. There are so many restaurants to choose from, but some of my go-to spots for a delicious NY strip or Prime Rib are Mission Ranch, Los Laureles Lodge, Running Iron and Woody’s at the Airport. If you're in the mood for Italian cuisine, I highly recommend Mezzaluna Pasteria & Mozzarella Bar and Osteria Al Mare, where the owners always warmly greet guests. A new addition to the dining scene is The Spotted Duck in Pacific Grove, known for its locally sourced dishes by Chef Jerry. One of their standout items is the Swank Farms Asparagus Bisque with blackened shrimp. If you're a French Onion Soup fan, be sure to visit Lugano Swiss Bistro. The dining scene in Monterey County is truly a delight.

Favorite Hidden Gems

The Monterey Wine Trail on River Road in Salinas has many tasting rooms. It’s a relaxed way to spend a few hours with friends enjoying the region’s award-winning Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah varietals. You never feel rushed.

Favorite Way to Spend A Weekend Off

Most recently, I spent the day with my daughter, who came to visit. We explored several art galleries in Carmel, enjoyed a fabulous lunch at Nicolas Cocina de Herencia and then visited friends at the Chalone Vineyard Tasting Room, both in the Carmel Plaza. It was such a relaxing day and we had fun finding some of the hidden gems tucked away down narrow alleyways.

Favorite Staycation

Two years ago, I checked into Hotel Carmel for a relaxing getaway. It's located next to Brophy's Tavern, where I enjoyed a delicious burger while sitting on the balcony. Over the years, I have had great experiences at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, Portola Hotel & Spa, Monterey Marriott and the Martine Inn, among many others.

Insider Tips from Monterey Locals for First-Time Visitors

Don't forget to visit Carmel Valley Village for its laid-back country feel and wine tasting rooms, downtown Salinas for interesting shops and a growing number of excellent restaurants and the quaint Pacific Grove. They all have different ambiances. On your way to Pacific Grove, stop by Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. If you enjoy golf, the beach and custom architecture, head to Pebble Beach for a scenic trip on 17-Mile Drive. Then, end at the Inn at Spanish Bay for the early evening bagpiper while sipping a beverage overlooking the bay. And since you are there, try the amazing wood-grilled Szechwan BBQ baby back ribs from Roy’s with a glass of one of Monterey County’s fine wines.
