It's no surprise that Monterey County's spas consistently earn national and even international acclaim. The scenery is relaxing enough, but the treatments will take you to the next level of zen. Search below for the ultimate in spa luxury.
Big Sur Spas
One of the area's well-recognized indulgences is the Spa at Post Ranch Inn, consistently ranked on lists for "Top Hotel Spas." With shaded lawns overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the setting alone is spectacular - but treatments such as the Big Sur Jade Stone Therapy and the chamomile, calendula and jasmine-infused Wildflower Facial truly raise the bar. (Other highlights: private yoga and meditation instruction, shaman sessions and guided nature hikes.)
In its own nod to Big Sur's spirited side, the Spa at Ventana offers creativity classes and astrology readings along with a clothing-optional pool, hot baths and refreshing treatments. Choose from experiences like the Santa Lucia Wine Wrap, an antioxidant-rich exfoliating treatment or the Essence of Big Sur Herbal Massage.
Another only-in-Big Sur spot: Esalen Institute. Its natural hot springs baths are located just 50 feet above the Pacific and the outdoor massage deck features a living roof planted with native coastal grasses.
Carmel Valley Spas
Just at the mouth of Carmel Valley is one of Monterey County's newest additions, the Refuge. This unique oasis invites guests to heat up, cool down and relax in their sauna, steam room and various plunge pools. The Spa at Bernardus Lodge's signature vinotherapy treatments reflects the region's grape-growing legacy, while an open-air therapy bath, steam room and fitness center further distinguish the spa. The Aiyana Spa at Carmel Valley Ranch uses botanicals grown on-site and a spa sommelier creates custom-blended infusions, oils and lotions for guests.
Monterey Spas
Overlooking the water, the Monterey Plaza Hotel's Vista Blue Spa is a seaside sanctuary with a fifth-floor rooftop sun deck, outdoor whirlpool tubs and a full-service fitness center. The Monterey Sea Mineral Massage and Body Polish is a true treat, but the Condé Nast Traveler "Top 50 Hotel Spas - US Mainland" honoree's ultimate experience is Bliss on the Bay.
Spa on the Plaza in historic Monterey has been consistently voted as the "Best Spa" and "Best Skincare Provider" by Monterey County Weekly readers. The up-scale spa offers 30 different holistic spa therapies, a whirlpool, private tubs and steam. The couple's room is a favorite and includes a romantic candlelit tub and private shower. Other luxurious amenities include pool, outdoor jacuzzi, fitness club and free parking.
Spa at InterContinental The Clement Monterey resides on a 4-diamond property located one block from the Monterey Aquarium. Popular services include the Couple's Big Sur Getaway. A romantic side-by-side massage with heated river stones and warm essential oils of rosemary, sage and lavender reminiscent of the Big Sur Coast. The spa also offers the latest in skincare technologies like Micro-current and LED Facials. All services include complimentary access to the pool, Jacuzzi, fitness room and valet parking.
The exquisite medispa, under the expertise of one of the country's most respected dermatologists, is nestled in the private gardens of a breathtaking historic property in Old Monterey. The cozy spa offers a unique experience to receive world-class dermatology consultation for medical or cosmetic skin concerns, in an unhurried, relaxed setting. Each guest is provided an individually tailored "skin diet" skincare program comprised of hand-picked Rx or cosmeceutical agents designed to best suit your needs and budget.
Pebble Beach Spas
The Spa at Pebble Beach, a 22,000-square-foot space specializing in wraps, water treatments and rejuvenating massages, offers weary golfers a Post-Golf Therapy package, that focuses on tired forearms, neck and lower back. Other spa highlights include two Vichy showers, sauna and steam facilities and a full-service salon that offers classic straight-razor shaves and barber services.
